Unfulfilled Longings: Finding Hope In Christ

Writer's picture: Janice IndupalliJanice Indupalli

Have you ever longed for something so deeply that it felt like it was just within your grasp, only to watch it slip away? Maybe, it’s a dream you’ve prayed for, a desire you’ve held onto for years, or something you thought was finally about to happen—and then it didn’t. Disappointment like that can feel crushing. It drains your energy, leaves you weary, and invites fear to whisper:

“What if I never get _(fill in the blank)?”

“What if (that hope) never comes true?”

If you’ve felt this, you’re not alone. Scripture speaks directly to moments like these: “Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God” (Psalm 42:11)."

But here’s the danger: when our longings go unmet, we’re tempted to place our hope in something—anything—other than God. We fixate on the things we desire, convincing ourselves they’ll satisfy us. And when those hopes crumble, instead of running to Christ, we grasp for control or cling to new, lesser hopes.

But, friend, what if those unfulfilled longings are God’s way of inviting you to something better? Sometimes, the Lord allows our hopes to remain unmet, not because He doesn’t love us, but because He loves us too much to let us settle for less than Himself. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him” (Lamentations 3:24). He knows no gift, no answered prayer, no earthly thing—no matter how good—will ever satisfy your soul like He can.

He is our hope. He is your Father, and He knows what you need, even when it feels like He’s holding back. “Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever” (Psalm 73:25-26).

So, when you look around and all you see are disappointments or unmet desires, remind yourself of this truth: your ultimate satisfaction is not found in what you long for but in the One who made you. Fix your eyes on Christ. Rest in Him. Delight yourself in His presence.

Even when longings go unmet, He is enough. And in Him, you will never be left wanting. “For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him” (Psalm 62:5).
