stepping into light

Darkness has a way of disorienting us. When we cannot see clearly, every step feels uncertain. The Bible teaches that this physical reality reflects a deeper spiritual truth. Apart from Christ, humanity walks in spiritual darkness, trying to navigate life through our own wisdom, instincts, and desires, yet never truly seeing the path before us.

Into that darkness, Jesus makes a remarkable declaration: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

Throughout the Old Testament, light symbolized God’s presence, guidance, and deliverance. The pillar of fire led Israel through the wilderness, reminding them that God Himself was directing their path. When Jesus calls Himself the Light of the world, He is claiming that this divine guidance and salvation are found in Him.

To follow Jesus is to step out of confusion and into clarity. His truth exposes our sin, directs our steps, and leads us into the life that comes from God. But Scripture also warns that rejecting this light leaves us in darkness. Jesus says that unless we believe in Him, we remain separated from God.

Beloved, the clearest display of this light is seen at the cross. There Jesus entered the darkness of sin and judgment so that sinners could receive forgiveness and life. Today the invitation is simple: believe the light. Follow Christ, and you will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.
